October 12, 2021: Chapter Meeting

Keynote Presentation

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Sonia Winner, President & CEO, Cleveland Museum of Natural History

TOPIC: 100th Anniversary and Major Expansion Project

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Sonia Winner became the 10th director of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in July 2018. In this role, she
partners with a 50-person Board of Directors and 120 staff members to advance the mission of the Museum—an
institution with $282 million in assets. For 100 years, the Museum has been inspiring a passion for science and nature in
its visitors. It ranks among the top 10 natural history museums in the United States in terms of endowment, size of collection,
and attendance.

Through the Museum’s Transformation Project and $150 million Transforming the World of Discovery campaign, Winner is spearheading a complete reimagining of the Museum’s complex in a way that highlights the interconnectedness of all life on Earth. The pioneering reinvention
will serve as a new model for natural history museums globally.

Prior to her appointment as CEO, Winner served as Acting Director of the Museum beginning in January 2018. She
returned to the Cleveland area in January 2017 to join the Museum team as Chief Development Officer.

Madeline Finn touches on a wide range of sonic directions in her solo work: sparse folk, meditative piano ballads, twangy rock, and string-laced indie. Luckily, the Cleveland-raised singer-songwriter is also the rare vocal talent with the range to handle just about any music she wants to write. She’ll howl and whisper, rage and mourn, croon and conspire—always with breathtaking precision and heart-piercing sincerity. A Top 70 American Idol finalist in 2018, Finn has also fronted two bands (the pop-punk-leaning band Envoi, Americana-tinged trio Whiskey Hollow) and toured throughout New England, the Pacific Northwest, and her adopted hometown of Nashville.

April 13, 2021: Chapter Meeting

Keynote Presentation

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Harlan M. Sands, President, Cleveland State University

MBWA – Management by Walking Around – is something Harlan Sands learned in the military, and it is a practice he has carried into his career in higher education. Whether he is walking and talking with students on campus, visiting staff in their offices, or more recently, “zooming” into remote classrooms, his high-energy, hands-on approach demonstrates his passion and commitment to the Cleveland State University (CSU) community.

As president of CSU, Cleveland’s only public research university, since 2018, Sands has accelerated the University’s upward trajectory as a Carnegie high research institution nationally recognized for quality, access, affordability, and social mobility. Additionally, the Brookings Institution ranked CSU 18th in the nation among public universities that provide social mobility for their students and conduct vital research that benefits society. Since joining CSU, overall enrollment and progression rates are stronger than ever, boasting the largest fall freshman class in history in 2019, an increase in graduate enrollments in 2020, and increases in retention and graduation rates across the board for all student groups.

Under Sands’ leadership, CSU has significantly strengthened its financial statement and balance sheet, invested in student coaching and direct financial support, and implemented new international and regional recruitment and marketing strategies. In addition, CSU has established three new local enrollment partnership pipelines with Cuyahoga Community College, Lorain County Community College, and Lakeland Community College, established a ground-breaking Living-Learning Community for Cleveland Metropolitan School District students through a partnership with Parker-Hannifin, and secured additional multi-million dollar gifts from several major contributors, setting new records in both giving and donor participation.

Throughout his academic career, all at urban-serving universities, Sands has always focused on meeting the unique needs of his students. Earning two of his degrees part-time at night for six years while serving full-time on active duty in the U.S. Navy, he understands the challenges faced by many non-traditional students, and is fully invested in CSU’s Engaged Learning approach that transforms lives, connects students to career opportunities, and contributes to the growth and vibrancy of the community.
